Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire revealed in a statement on August 14 that USDC Tap-to-Pay will soon be available on iPhones, following Apple's recent update.
Allaire said, "Soon you'll be able to use USDC tap-to-pay on your iPhone. Wallet developers, it's time to act."
At the same time, Allaire clarified that Circle has no direct relationship or partnership with Apple or Apple Pay.
On August 14, Apple announced it would now allow third-party apps to use its NFC technology for transactions. This update will enable alternative payment systems to compete with Apple Pay, the iPhone's primary payment option.
The announcement comes amid extensive regulatory pressure from entities such as the European Union. Apple confirmed the new feature will roll out in the upcoming iOS 18.1 update.
With this release, developers will be able to use NFC contactless transactions via the Secure Element (SE) within their apps, without relying on Apple Pay or Apple Wallet.

The USDC Tap-to-Pay application will leverage Apple’s latest NFC technology made available to third-party developers. This change will allow various wallet applications—including those supporting Web3 or crypto assets—to conduct transactions using NFC.
According to Allaire, iOS wallets supporting USDC will enable devices to exchange transaction information through a simple tap, streamlining the payment process.
For example, point-of-sale (PoS) systems could transmit a blockchain address or payment amount to an iPhone, prompting users to confirm the transaction via FaceID or another authentication method. The app would then process the payment over the blockchain.
Allaire believes this development could facilitate direct merchant payments in USD Coin and enable trading of other digital assets, such as NFTs or stablecoins like EURC.
As such, he encouraged wallet developers to integrate the latest Apple iOS SDK in preparation for the launch of peer-to-peer USDC payments.
Members of the crypto asset community welcomed the move, viewing it as a catalyst for the next phase of crypto adoption.
Idan Levin, partner at venture capital firm Collider VC, said: "Reducing payment steps meets user needs. Every small step accumulates into a giant leap. The moment when billions of people use public blockchains is coming."
