How Botto is Revolutionizing the Art World and Democratizing AI Art?
AI art is booming, with some NFTs selling at five-digit prices.

AI art is booming, with some NFTs selling for five-figure prices. It's a $75 million industry that could easily scale to $10 billion. One AI project in particular has captured my attention—here’s why:

Generative AI is unlocking new creative possibilities by producing original works indistinguishable from those made by human artists. But instead of merely collecting AI art, what if you could own and govern the AI artist itself?
Enter Botto—the most compelling project at the intersection of generative AI, art NFTs, and DAO governance.
Botto isn’t human—it was created by Mario Klingemann.

Botto’s art engine generates over 350 unique artworks each week using multiple AI models. Every week, the lowest-scoring pieces are eliminated based on community voting.
Initially powered by VQGAN + CLIP, the engine added Stable Diffusion in October 2022.

In Botto, "Periods" refer to discrete time intervals in the artistic process. The AI’s style evolves significantly across different periods.
For example, during the Fragmentation period, artworks exhibit far greater heterogeneity than in the Genesis period:
- Monochrome vs. colorful;
- Simple vs. complex;
- Abstract vs. figurative.

Botto’s art engine is not static—its evolution and creative direction are shaped by the community. New AI models can be added at any time. The taste model that selects artworks for voting and the text prompt algorithms are trained through community feedback and voting patterns.
What makes Botto especially exciting is that it generates real revenue—ETH—and distributes it back to its community. Most income comes from weekly auction sales.
Weekly sales have been steadily increasing.

Here are several things that excite me:
1. "Paradox"
During Botto’s third period, it began creating artworks that capture duality, surreal beauty, and the aesthetic of chaos.
Some of these pieces are deeply thought-provoking.

2. Future Collaborations
Over the past year, Botto has exhibited its works in multiple galleries and locations. It maintains a strong relationship with SuperRare and will continue leveraging that platform.
By the way, Variant announced an investment in Botto on February 16, 2023, acquiring a certain amount of $BOTTO tokens on the secondary market, though the exact sum hasn't been disclosed.

Botto embodies the core ethos of Web3: co-creation and ownership by fans.
It carries an incredible narrative as the world’s first autonomous AI artist capable of producing museum-quality artwork.
I love how Botto democratizes AI art, making participation accessible to everyone. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a Botto artwork to be part of the AI art movement—you just need a few $BOTTO tokens to join and vote weekly.
