TechFlow news, June 20 — A research team from MIT, Wellesley College, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design has recently discovered that long-term reliance on large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT may impair cognitive abilities. The study found that participants who used AI for writing had only half the number of alpha-wave brain connections compared to independent thinkers (42 vs. 79), and 83.3% could not accurately recall content from their own written work. Researchers refer to this phenomenon as "cognitive debt"—a short-term reduction in mental effort that leads to long-term declines in critical thinking and creativity.
