TechFlow news, on May 4, according to Jinshi Data, SpaceX's Starbase headquarters in southern Texas is about to become an official city. On Saturday local time, a vote to formally register Starbase as a self-governing city in Texas passed by a landslide. Among the area's 283 eligible voters, most were SpaceX employees. The base serves as a launch site for SpaceX's collaborative projects with the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), aiming to send astronauts to the Moon and even Mars. Musk first proposed the idea of Starbase in 2021, and this approval was expected. This victory holds significant importance for Musk, whose popularity has declined since becoming the de facto "spokesperson" for Trump's federal workforce reduction plan, while Tesla's profits have also sharply contracted. SpaceX's employment and investment in the region have received broad support from local officials. However, the city proposal has drawn criticism from opponents concerned that it could expand Musk's personal control over the area, potentially granting him authority to close a popular beach and state park for launches.
