TechFlow reports, on February 28, according to an official announcement, the Ethereum Layer-2 network Base has launched three major technical upgrades: Flashblocks, Base Appchains, and Smart Wallet Sub Accounts, aiming to make on-chain applications faster, simpler, and more powerful.
The Flashblocks technology reduces Base's effective block time from 2 seconds to 200 milliseconds, making it currently the fastest EVM-compatible chain. Developed by Flashbots, this technology leverages partially built blocks published by block builders. It has already gone live on the Base Sepolia testnet and is expected to launch on the mainnet in Q2 2025.
Base Appchains are Layer-3 chains built on top of Base, providing dedicated infrastructure for high-traffic applications requiring additional block space. Supported by Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP) and utilizing the op-enclave framework, they enable instant verification of chain states via AWS S3 and AWS Nitro Enclaves. Game projects including Blocklords, Super Champs, and Metacade have announced plans to launch Appchains.
Smart Wallet Sub Accounts streamline user experience by reducing wallet popups, enhancing security, and eliminating the need for manually managing separate accounts across different chains. This feature is already live on the Base testnet and will be deployed on the mainnet in Q2 2025.
