Cryptocurrency Hacks Set Record in First Half of 2026, Losses Exceed $1 Billion

In the first half of 2026, losses from hacker attacks on cryptocurrency projects have exceeded $1 billion, with the number of verified attack incidents reaching a record high for the same period in history, described as "the half-year with the most hacker attacks on record." However, in terms of value, overall losses remain lower than the same period last year, mainly because a $1.5 billion attack incident occurred at Bybit in 2025, raising the baseline.

TechFlow news, on July 29, according to The Block, security company Blockaid stated that crypto projects lost over $1 billion due to hacker attacks in the first half of 2026, the number of verified attack incidents hit a record high for the same period in history, and called it "the most hacked half-year on record." However, in terms of amount, overall losses remain lower than the same period last year, mainly because a $1.5 billion attack on Bybit occurred in 2025, raising the base.

Blockaid pointed out that North Korea-linked hackers were the largest source of stolen funds in the first half of the year, involving a $285 million attack on Drift and a $292 million attack on KelpDAO, totaling nearly $600 million. By chain, Ethereum and Solana were affected most severely, with losses reaching $332 million and $326 million respectively. Additionally, the report predicts that AI-related attack incidents will increase in the coming months.
