TechFlow News, July 29. According to The Information, Google (GOOG.O) disclosed last week that it has agreed to assume third-party data center lease payments worth up to $44 billion in the event of tenant default. This figure represents an increase from $6.5 billion as of the end of September, reflecting Google's efforts to provide companies such as Anthropic with its solutions alternative to Nvidia AI chips.

It is reported that Google has taken on these commitments, known as "backstop guarantees," to scale up its TPU sales. Two sources revealed that when Google took on these commitments, it was based on the consideration that revenue from TPU sales will exceed the financial obligations generated by guaranteeing data center leases to house these chips.

One of the sources stated that company executives are convinced that this financial calculation is favorable for Alphabet. The report stated that Alphabet has provided lease guarantees for a total capacity of approximately 2.4 gigawatts across about ten projects. None of these projects are currently completed, which means Alphabet's guarantee measures have not yet taken effect.
