Myanmar Passes Anti-Cyber Fraud Law: Forced Participation in Fraud Resulting in Death Punishable by Death, Cryptocurrency Fraud Maximum Life Imprisonment

According to Decrypt, the Myanmar military-backed parliament passed an anti-online fraud law on Tuesday. According to the draft published in May this year, using violence or illegal detention to force others to engage in online fraud, if it results in the death of victims, is punishable by death; those operating online fraud compounds or committing "digital currency fraud (cryptocurrency fraud)" face up to life imprisonment.

TechFlow reports, July 28, according to Decrypt, the Myanmar military-backed parliament passed an anti-online fraud law on Tuesday. According to the draft published in May this year, those who use violence or illegal detention to force others to engage in online fraud, if it results in the death of the victim, can be sentenced to death; those operating online fraud parks or committing "digital currency fraud (cryptocurrency fraud)" face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Lawmaker Aye Chan told AFP that the death penalty clause has been retained in the approved version, and the bill's "key parts remain unchanged," but the full legal text has not yet been published.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that losses caused by related fraud activities in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania in 2025 will be approximately $88.3 billion to $114.1 billion.
