According to the draft published in May this year, using violence or illegal detention to force others to engage in online fraud, if it results in the death of victims, is punishable by death; those operating online fraud compounds or committing "digital currency fraud (cryptocurrency fraud)" face up to life imprisonment.

Lawmaker Aye Chan told AFP that the death penalty clause has been retained in the approved version, and the bill's "key parts remain unchanged," but the full legal text has not yet been published.
