Google AI Search Penetration Rate Surges from 15% to 43% in One Year, User Dwell Time Significantly Extended
Google AI Overviews' share in search results has surged from 15% to 43% over the past year, and AI Mode monthly visits have also risen from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026. User search behavior has subsequently undergone significant changes, with average search length continuing to rise; short keyword queries are being replaced by more natural conversational questions, and user time spent on the Google platform has significantly increased.
TechFlow news, July 28, according to TechCrunch, latest data from market intelligence company Similarweb shows that the proportion of Google AI Overviews appearing in search results has surged from 15% to 43% over the past year, while monthly visits to AI Mode also increased from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026. User search behavior has shifted significantly accordingly, with average search length continuing to rise, short keyword queries being replaced by more natural conversational questions, and user dwell time on the Google platform significantly extended.
This trend has a significant impact on content publishers; although AI citations have grown more than fivefold compared to a year ago, the actual outbound clicks remain limited. However, after ChatGPT launched search updates on May 7, the proportion of webpage referrals on US desktops increased significantly from 25% in March to nearly 60% by the end of May, bringing some improvement for publishers. Analysts point out that Google is accelerating its evolution from a "gateway to the internet" to a "destination for information consumption."
