NFL Writes to CFTC Chairman, Requesting Strengthened Regulatory Rules for Sports Prediction Markets

According to The Block, the National Football League (NFL) sent a letter to CFTC Chairman Michael Selig on July 27 in response to the CFTC's recently released draft regulations on prediction market oversight, calling for enhancements in multiple key areas. In the letter, the NFL emphasized that protecting game integrity is its top priority and urged the CFTC to tighten the definition of high-risk contracts that are susceptible to manipulation, rely on referee discretion, or have outcomes that can be known in advance. Additionally, the NFL objected to the 10-day pre-approval window being too short, requested clear insider trading prohibitions and the establishment of a mandatory "League-Exclusive Prohibited Bettors" list, and reiterated previously proposed consumer protection recommendations including prohibiting margin trading, restricting advertising, and setting a minimum age threshold of 21.
