TechFlow News, June 11: According to CoinDesk, on June 11 local time, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives proposing the establishment of a “Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force” under the leadership of the Attorney General. The task force would comprise multiple federal agencies—including the FBI, the Department of Justice, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Homeland Security—and would be specifically tasked with coordinating and leading investigations into cryptocurrency theft and fraud cases.
The bill was jointly introduced by Republican Representative Lance Gooden of the House Judiciary Committee and Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer of the House Financial Services Committee. Gottheimer noted that last year’s thefts and scams in the crypto industry resulted in losses totaling $11 billion, yet “victims have nowhere to turn.” The new task force would provide a “single federal point of contact.” At present, it remains uncertain whether the bill will advance; it must still pass committee review or be attached to must-pass legislation.
