TechFlow News, May 5: Omar, a partner at Dragonfly, commented on Coinbase’s recent layoff of approximately 14% of its workforce (around 700 employees), stating that the move aims to save roughly $225 million annually in compensation costs and accelerate the company’s transformation into an “AI-native” organization.
He noted that AI has significantly altered production methods, substantially boosting engineering efficiency; even non-technical teams can now participate in production-grade code development, and most workflows are being automated.
Citing internal thinking, Omar explained that Coinbase is reshaping itself into an organization “centered on intelligence, with humans collaborating at the edge,” while simultaneously advancing flat management (reducing organizational layers to five or fewer), eliminating purely managerial roles, and centrally recruiting AI-native talent capable of managing large-scale AI agents—to achieve higher output efficiency.
