TechFlow News: According to a report by Sing Pao on March 24, a 39-year-old Hong Kong woman met a man on a mobile dating app who claimed to work for a new-energy company. The two later moved their communication to WhatsApp and developed a romantic online relationship. The man lured the victim into investing in cryptocurrencies on a fake trading platform, promising high returns. Following instructions from the platform’s customer service, the victim transferred over HK$5.5 million via FPS (Faster Payment System) to multiple unknown personal accounts over approximately two months. Subsequently, the scammer disappeared, and the victim realized she had been defrauded.
Last week, Hong Kong police received 15 cases of romance scam fraud, involving losses totaling nearly HK$10 million. Authorities warn that such scams frequently use investments in precious metals and cryptocurrencies as bait.
