TechFlow News: On March 12, according to CoinDesk, developer activity in the cryptocurrency sector has been continuously declining since the beginning of 2025. Weekly code commits have plummeted from approximately 850,000 to roughly 210,000—a drop of about 75%—while the number of active developers has decreased by 56% to around 4,600. Meanwhile, AI-related projects are absorbing substantial developer resources.
Major public blockchains are all experiencing developer attrition. Ethereum’s weekly active developers have declined by 34% over the past three months, falling to 2,811; Solana’s have dropped by 40% to 942; Base’s have fallen by 52% to 378; Aptos has lost approximately 60%; BNB Chain’s code commits have declined by 85%; and Celo’s have dropped by 52%. Currently, only the wallet infrastructure category shows modest growth, with weekly active developers rising approximately 6% to around 308.
In contrast, GitHub as a whole added approximately 36 million new developers in 2025, and its annual code commit volume grew year-on-year by about 25%. AI-related repositories on GitHub now exceed 4.3 million, and generative AI projects boast over 1 million monthly active contributors.
