TechFlow News, February 3: The UK’s data protection regulator has launched an investigation into xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company. Regulatory authorities are intensifying scrutiny over the use of the AI chatbot Grok to generate and disseminate sexually explicit images of individuals. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said the formal investigation will focus on whether personal data was improperly processed in the generation of such images. Last month, Grok triggered strong public and political backlash after users on X prompted the chatbot to generate sexually explicit AI images of real people without their consent. Earlier on Tuesday, French law enforcement conducted a raid on X’s office in Paris. The ICO stated it has the authority to fine xAI up to £17.5 million (approximately $24 million) or 4% of the company’s global annual revenue—whichever is higher. (Jinshi)
