TechFlow News: On January 23, Nic Carter, widely regarded as the “father of smart contracts,” published a lengthy article pointing out that X (formerly Twitter) is increasingly dominated by its “For You” recommendation algorithm. This algorithm faces a trade-off between maximizing user dwell time and preserving stable connections between creators and their followers. Currently, X prioritizes the former—maximizing dwell time—at the expense of the latter. As a result, creators struggle to consistently reach their audiences, and users fail to reliably receive content from the creators they follow—undermining the viability of niche communities like Crypto Twitter (i.e., “filter bubbles”). Moreover, X’s suppression of external links has driven long-form and in-depth discussion creators toward more predictable distribution platforms such as Substack, thereby hollowing out X’s high-quality content ecosystem. Meanwhile, ordinary users are increasingly fed “engaging but low-quality content,” rather than the specific, niche content they deliberately chose to follow. Nic Carter predicts that a future “digital property rights” movement will emerge, demanding algorithmic transparency, safeguarding creators’ reach rights, and protecting followers’ rights to receive content from accounts they choose to follow.
