TechFlow news, January 13 — According to Jinsui Data citing The New York Times, three知情 employees said Meta Platforms (META.O) is considering layoffs within a division of its Reality Labs unit focused on the "metaverse" business, potentially starting as early as next month, affecting 10% to 30% of staff in that team. This team primarily handles VR headsets and VR-based social networks. Reality Labs consists of the metaverse division and the wearable devices division.
Sources indicated that management plans to redirect funds saved from the layoffs into its AR glasses project. Meta launched AR glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban back in 2021, and their sales have already exceeded internal company targets. According to insiders, Meta is reevaluating its investments in metaverse-related initiatives, and executives within the metaverse division are now considering significant reductions in VR-related positions.
