According to Charles Schwab's "2024 ETFs and Beyond Study," crypto assets continue to gain momentum among younger investors. 62% of millennial ETF investors plan to allocate a portion of their portfolio to digital assets within the next year.
Among all surveyed investors, crypto assets ranked as the second most popular asset class, signaling a significant shift in investment preferences.
Compared to previous generations, interest in crypto assets has surged. Among older investors, only 44% of Generation X and 15% of Generation Z expressed similar intentions.
The survey was conducted from July 2 to July 20, collecting responses from 2,200 investors, including 1,000 ETF investors and an additional 200 respondents who began investing after 2020.
The study found that millennials are particularly enthusiastic about alternative assets such as crypto. Currently, crypto assets have become the second most favored investment choice for this group, trailing only U.S. equities.
Millennials not only seek portfolio diversification but also want to invest in markets that reflect future trends and technological innovation.
Meanwhile, 39% of millennial investors are eyeing spot crypto ETFs—significantly higher than Generation X (24%) and Generation Z (11%), indicating this cohort’s greater inclination toward high-risk, high-return strategies.
Millennials are also more likely to embrace sophisticated ETFs, including those focused on long/short strategies, volatility hedging, and smart beta products.
Besides crypto assets, millennials show 45% interest in physical assets such as commodities and infrastructure, and 47% interest in bonds and fixed income.
However, the survey also reveals a cautious mindset among young investors. While around 66% of millennials express confidence in outperforming the market, they also admit concerns about whether their portfolios can recover during economic downturns or "black swan" events.
This cautious optimism is shaping their investment decisions, with many prioritizing diversification through crypto assets to both hedge against inflation and capture growth opportunities.

At the same time, crypto assets are becoming a key component of millennial portfolios—not just for speculation.
Almost half of the respondents said their interest in digital assets stems from a desire to align investments with personal beliefs and values, further indicating a generational shift in how wealth creation is perceived.
Millennials are also most likely to personalize their portfolios, with 46% planning to invest in companies and funds that reflect their social, environmental, or ethical values.
The study highlights the growing role of education in driving millennial investment decisions.
As more financial institutions roll out crypto and blockchain-based products, information about these assets continues to expand.
In fact, millennials are more familiar than older generations with direct indexing and similar customized investment options, with 80% expressing interest in exploring these methods further.
Despite market volatility, nearly 40% of millennials remain bullish on crypto assets, reflecting their long-term outlook on this asset class.
Charles Schwab’s survey indicates that as crypto products evolve, they will continue to attract young investors eager to diversify and personalize their portfolios.
As crypto assets receive increasing attention, financial institutions are expected to further innovate ETFs and other financial products to meet the preferences of a younger, tech-savvy investor base.
The findings suggest that digital assets are not merely a passing trend, but are becoming foundational elements of the next generation’s investment portfolios.
