Citrea launches public devnet, with BTC set to be tested as a data availability layer for the first time
Users can currently transfer test BTC from a customized Bitcoin signet to the Citrea public Devnet.
Citrea launches public devnet for developers and users, marking the first time Bitcoin is being tested as a data availability layer.
On June 5, 2024, Citrea announced the launch of its Public Devnet, marking the first instance of testing Bitcoin as a data availability layer. With this release, Bitcoin serves as a foundational layer for complex applications, enabling developers to leverage Bitcoin’s full security. The Citrea Public Devnet is also open to users, who can now interact with applications deployed on the network.
Citrea is the first ZK rollup to use Bitcoin for data availability and settlement, enabled by its trust-minimized two-way peg mechanism Clementine, built on BitVM. Fully EVM-compatible, Citrea allows all EVM developers to easily build applications on Bitcoin. Citrea’s unique approach to Bitcoin scalability and its public devnet means:
-
Citrea’s unique approach tests the scalability limits of Bitcoin as a data availability layer.
-
Citrea is the first ZK rollup to record state diffs and batches of zero-knowledge proofs on Bitcoin.
-
It is the only scalable solution that enables developers to build complex applications inheriting Bitcoin’s full security.
Make Bitcoin the foundation of world finance.
Citrea’s vision is to build scalable infrastructure that propels Bitcoin into its next phase as the foundation of world finance. Achieving this requires expanding Bitcoin’s blockspace to increase transaction capacity and enable greater expressiveness and functionality—without changing its consensus rules.
The launch of the Citrea Public Devnet marks the first step toward establishing Bitcoin as the base layer of a dynamic financial ecosystem. Developers can refer to Citrea’s developer documentation and discuss their application ideas with the team via the developer contact form.
Bridge to Citrea Public Devnet: Users can now transfer test BTC from a custom Bitcoin signet to the Citrea Public Devnet to use decentralized applications on the devnet. Withdrawals from the Citrea Public Devnet are trustless—meaning users can independently reclaim their funds after 200 Bitcoin blocks if any deposit issues occur. While funds on Devnet and Testnet have no real-world value, the Citrea team still prioritizes allowing users to experience this trustless withdrawal mechanism.
Secure on-chain finance with Bitcoin!
