In the digital age, with the rise of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, more and more people are exploring alternative payment methods. GoKu, the most creative guy in the Web3 community, decided to launch a unique challenge—surviving in Hong Kong for 7 days using only digital currency! This challenge was filled with twists and surprises, including sleeping overnight at McDonald's and losing all his USDT. What started as a survival test turned into a rags-to-riches comeback story... ultimately ending in success!

Day 1 Journey:
-
14:00 Start at West Kowloon Station: GoKu met up with his friend Wang Fugui at West Kowloon Station, officially kicking off the 7-day digital currency survival challenge.
-
15:30 Starbucks: After asking staff whether cryptocurrency payments were accepted (unsuccessfully), he received a cup of hot water and discussed Day 1 strategies inside Starbucks.
-
16:00 Attempt at Apple Flagship Store in Tsim Sha Tsui: Arriving at the Apple flagship store, GoKu used the high-speed Wi-Fi to conduct an online meeting for one hour. However, his attempt to buy AirPods using cryptocurrency failed.
-
18:00 Searching for a café: Following an online tip, they searched for a café partnered with Coffee DAO but mistakenly entered Chungking Mansions. Eventually found the café in the basement next to it. The owner said they couldn't use cryptocurrency, so no coffee was had.
-
18:30 Setback at Chungking Mansions: At the famous Chungking Mansions, hopes were high for using digital currency. Unfortunately, neither light eateries nor 7-Eleven accepted it. Even attempting to sneak into The Peninsula Hotel as a fake influencer for a free meal failed—only managing to sample a small piece of cheese at the hotel’s basement supermarket.
-
19:00 The Peninsula Hotel: GoKu and Wang Fugui went to The Peninsula Hotel, trying to get supplies by leveraging Wang’s identity as a food reviewer—but failed again. They rested and drank water in the lobby, then on their way to the basement encountered a wine exchange. GoKu asked if he could pay with cryptocurrency—no luck. Following another clue, he again sampled just a bite of cheese at the Italian grocery downstairs.
-
21:00 Paying Tribute to He Youbing: After arriving at a barbecue spot in Mong Kok about an hour before their 22:00 reservation, GoKu and Wang discussed next steps at a nearby McDonald's. Through local secondhand websites, they learned some vendors would accept cryptocurrency in exchange for bicycles—but bikes are hard to use in central Hong Kong, so they passed. With no accommodation secured for Day 1, they decided to stay overnight at McDonald’s—a tribute to He Youbing, who once attempted Bitcoin-only survival in mainland China.
-
22:00 BBQ with Wealthy Friend: In the evening, they arrived at Wang Fugui’s friend’s barbecue restaurant, which also didn’t accept cryptocurrency. Wang enjoyed an 800 HKD feast while GoKu stuck to his principles, live-streaming beside the table without touching any food.
-
23:10 Successful Dinner: After repeated attempts and failures, GoKu finally succeeded in paying with cryptocurrency at Subtle Island, recommended by the #Rats community. He spent 87 USDT (equivalent to over 200,000 Rats tokens). Located at Unit 4, Yau Ching Commercial Centre, 51 Argyle Street South, Mong Kok. ✅
-
Overnight at McDonald’s: Sitting inside McDonald’s, GoKu saw many workers or homeless individuals sleeping at tables—neatly lined up. He found an empty seat, lay down, and managed to sleep through the night.
Day 2 Journey:
-
11:00 Unexpected Gain: GoKu woke up at McDonald’s to a pleasant surprise—the cost of his previous night’s 80U meal had effectively earned him 30U due to the rise in #Rats token value.
-
11:40 Anle Café: Prompted by an online tip, they learned that Anle Café near Prince Edward, a partner of Coffee DAO, accepts cryptocurrency. They immediately walked there. Initially, a staff member said no, but when GoKu directly asked, the manager stepped in and said yes. ✅
-
15:30 Booking a Hotel: After working and editing videos at the café all afternoon, they discovered a website where hotels could be booked with cryptocurrency. Using travel platform @travalacom, they successfully booked a hotel with 228 TRC20 USDT. ✅
-
14:40 Minor Hiccup: Upon arrival, they encountered a problem—they had mistakenly selected the wrong check-in date and couldn’t enter.
-
15:00 Successfully Booked Hotel: After coordinating with customer service, GoKu resolved the issue and successfully checked in using cryptocurrency.
Spending Summary:
Spent 460U on @binance-backed @travalacom (231U will be refunded after 7 days)
Coffee cost: 30U
Day 3 Journey:
-
09:55 Breakfast: Got up and went to the restaurant for breakfast—everything went smoothly.
-
11:00 Check-out Issue: Spent an hour drying clothes before checking out, but due to dampness, failed to complete check-out.
-
12:00 Facing the Damp Clothes Dilemma: Decided to visit Pricerite, a store providing daily necessities and reportedly accepting cryptocurrency, based on a clue from @Ru7Longcrypto. ✅
-
14:30 Series of Failures: After two and a half hours of effort, suffered multiple setbacks. Booked the hotel incorrectly again, losing 168U; unable to shop at U购 or Pricerite; new concept store too far; massage parlor and café attempts failed; video content was censored.
-
17:30 Meeting New Friends: Finished working at Anle Café and met several new crypto friends, spending 80 USDT. ✅
-
17:45 Walking to Ganba Restaurant: Left the café heading to Hung Hom. After finishing work at Anle Café, they followed an online clue to Ganba Restaurant, a Japanese eatery. Walked nearly 6 kilometers round-trip from Prince Edward to Hung Hom. It rained lightly along the way. A prominent local figure invited GoKu to dinner, but per challenge rules, he declined and continued walking, climbing hills and wondering whether the restaurant truly accepted cryptocurrency.
-
19:16 Arrival at Ganba Restaurant: The owner was very friendly and accepted payment—0.00194 BTC. ✅
-
22:00 Wang Fugui Ends Challenge: After returning on foot from Hung Hom to the hotel, Wang Fugui completed his three-day journey. GoKu would continue alone for the remaining four days.
Remaining Funds: 970U
Day 4 Journey:
-
11:00 Cost-Saving Measure: Facing tight budget constraints, GoKu booked a capsule room for 59U and began the new day. ✅
-
12:00 Coffee & Work: After waking up, urgently needed coffee and a place to work. To maintain dignity, planned to “borrow” a desk at an exchange near Tsim Sha Tsui while figuring out how to get to Central.
-
12:40 Café Encounter: While wandering, initially headed to the exchange office but changed plans upon learning filming wasn’t allowed. Ended up at a café, met a young man, spent 15U on coffee, and experienced warm hospitality from the owner. ✅
-
13:40 Haircut: Introduced by friend @BoscoY6, GoKu visited a nearby barbershop. The barber has been trading crypto for years. Paid 52U for a haircut and praised the JPEX platform. ✅
-
15:00 Wang Fugui Returns as Journalist: Wang rejoined GoKu at Anle Café, now taking on the role of documentarian for the rest of the challenge.
-
15:30 Met Uber Driver: Continued to Anle Café to work, determined to find a way across the harbor to Central. After spending 26 USDT at a café, his friend Ruki connected him with Summer, a former Uber driver, who took him from Prince Edward across the harbor to a bar in Central for 50U. ✅
-
17:50 Coffee + Snacks: Spent 26 USDT. ✅
-
20:00 Bar Hangout: GoKu arrived at AOAO, a high-end bar in Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Although drinks were offered for free, he insisted on paying the full bill—350U. ✅ Enjoyed dinner with friends, indulging in a bit of luxury under challenge conditions. Two other friends joined, along with the bar owner and his girlfriend—seven in total—discussing Bitcoin’s value, investment experiences, GoKu selling his house to buy the dip,各自的爆仓经历 (personal liquidation stories), successfully evangelized Bitcoin to the owner, and warned against futures trading. A day full of surprises and unexpected gains, adding rich color to the digital currency survival challenge.
Day 5 Journey:
-
02:00: Arrived at Golden Wheel Building, encountered a “haunted house” incident causing distress.
-
05:00: Arrived at McDonald’s in Tsim Sha Tsui, starting a new day.
-
12:00 Balance Warning: GoKu’s balance dropped to around 400U.
-
14:00 Enjoyed Bone Adjustment: Spent 50U on traditional Chinese therapy and bone realignment, receiving praise for being in great physical condition. Thanks to @OfficialYibi, which connects over 50 Hong Kong merchants accepting cryptocurrency, GoKu downloaded YIBI, topped up, and paid the owner. ✅
-
18:00 Zero Balance: Visited a KTV that accepts cryptocurrency and offers pool games. In pool matches priced at 100U per game, he lost the first three to professional players. In the final match, he won 50U, but then lost all 150U in subsequent challenges—balance now zero. ✅
-
Late at night, GoKu launched an online consulting service, charging 200U/hour or equivalent BTC. This day tested him with highs and lows, constant challenges and opportunities. Still staying overnight at McDonald’s, he scheduled clients for consultations the next day at a nearby Starbucks.
Day 6 Journey:
Day 6 marked a turning point in GoKu’s digital currency survival challenge.
-
08:26: Woken by McDonald’s staff, decided to head out to K11. On the way, GoKu observed everyone rushing and weary, creating a rhythmic sense of urban life. Balance: 300U.
-
10:35 Comeback: Worked continuously for 7 hours, served 4 consulting fans, and connected with Gu’er Master from Hong Kong project Yuliverse. After over an hour of work at Starbucks, secured five marketing growth consulting gigs—signs of a turnaround.
-
Two consulting deposit payments received the previous day opened new doors. With only 27 hours left until the end of the challenge, balance stood at 500U (deposits). GoKu prepared to use his earnings to book a hotel and take a shower. ✅
-
15:00 Meetup with Gu’er Master: Wang Fugui and GoKu reunited at Starbucks. Based on a clue from Sunny, the trio—Wang, GoKu, and Gu’er Master—headed to a nearby bar supporting YIBI cryptocurrency payments. This became the fourth restaurant willing to accept digital currency. ✅

Total: 15 successful uses of cryptocurrency.
During the 7-day challenge, GoKu asked over 30 merchants per day—more than 200 inquiries in total. Only one successful transaction came from cold outreach; all others relied on tips from online users. Success rate: 15 out of 200 = 7.5%.
The “GoKu Challenges Living in Hong Kong Using Only Digital Currency for 7 Days” event has now concluded. After returning to normal life, GoKu shared his reflections:
“After this challenge, I haven’t fully returned to my old self yet. I used to be lazy and procrastinating, but now I act swiftly. Talking to strangers on the street feels natural—I’ve even become slightly extroverted. After dropping my backpack, I feel like I’m walking with the wind.
If you call this a performance, I’d rather define it as a spiritual journey. Over 7 days—while maintaining regular work—I averaged 11,100 steps daily, inquired over 200 times about crypto acceptance, edited 21 videos, slept at McDonald’s three times, and walked over 35 miles.
What moved me most wasn’t the potential of cryptocurrency, but the底层 people struggling to survive—those who don’t have time to learn about crypto or desire to understand new things. Their only daily mission is to work and survive, like walking zombies.
I loved the time I spent sleeping at McDonald’s. I saw many ‘McSleepers’—people who’ve lost hope, diabetic patients with purple legs; young couples resting after drinking; even creepy uncles sending flirtatious voice notes to streamers, only to sprint home when their wife calls. These seven days felt like seven months. I measured every corner of this city with my eyes and feet. Is cryptocurrency important? Yes—to me. But to many others, not really…
I feel I’ve won this challenge, but I probably won’t do it again. First, it’s exhausting. Second, I realize I’m just a tiny part of the broader evangelism effort. The biggest lesson wasn’t forcing others to accept something, but learning to accept and understand how the world truly works.
Be yourself, and wait quietly for flowers to bloom.
Finally, I want to thank all the brothers who helped me during this Hong Kong journey. Thank you!”
