Bitsat: Bitcoin HyperLayer Based on ZK-Rollup
Bitsat aims to build a new network layer—HyperLayer—on the Bitcoin network using ZK technology.
Author Bitsat
With Bitcoin surpassing $60,000 and the upcoming Bitcoin halving event fueling expectations, the BTC ecosystem is experiencing an explosive boom, making it the most watched focal point in the crypto industry.

In the cryptocurrency space, Bitcoin (BTC) has long been regarded as digital gold, winning global investor favor due to its superior security, decentralization, and value storage capabilities. However, with continuous advancements in blockchain technology and surging application demands, Bitcoin’s native Layer 1 chain has shown increasing limitations in smart contracts and scalability. To overcome this bottleneck and drive sustained growth of the Bitcoin ecosystem, an innovative solution is urgently needed.
Technical Implementation: HyperLayer + ZK
Bitsat aims to build a new network layer—HyperLayer—on top of the Bitcoin network using ZK technology, enabling scalable, secure, and low-cost transaction processing and asset transfers. Through a VM Engine, it brings smart contract functionality to the Bitcoin ecosystem while maintaining compatibility with the EVM ecosystem.
Project Features
- Smart Contracts and DeFi Support: Bitsat's HyperLayer technology introduces smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) to the Bitcoin network, enabling users to build various protocols and apps, recreating a "DeFi Summer" on Bitcoin.
- High Performance and Scalability: Leveraging an asynchronous consensus mechanism and optimized transaction processing, Bitsat achieves high performance and scalability, maximizing throughput for each consensus group and enhancing network efficiency.
- Security: Employs Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) for account asset control and management, while inheriting Bitcoin-level security through UTXO validation and zk-proofs, ensuring robust asset protection.
- EVM Compatibility: Fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing Ethereum developers to easily migrate their smart contracts and DApps to the Bitcoin network, expanding its ecosystem.
- Low-Cost Transactions: Optimizes transaction processing and reduces network fees, enabling low-cost asset transfers and transactions, providing users with a more seamless experience.
- UTXO Validation and zk-proof Technology: Utilizes UTXO validation and zk-proof techniques to compress and verify transaction states on UTXOs, enabling fast and low-cost Bitcoin transfers and improving network efficiency.
Technical Architecture
Bitsat operates by creating a HyperLayer, whose core design consists of three key components: a cross-layer communication mechanism via ZK-Connector, VM communication mechanisms, a Virtual Machine Engine (VM Engine) enabling smart contracts, and an asynchronous high-performance consensus mechanism.
The HyperLayer compresses transaction states and validates them on UTXOs. By conducting validation at the UTXO level, transactions do not require all data to be directly recorded on the Bitcoin mainchain, while still inheriting Bitcoin’s security. This enables near-instantaneous and low-cost Bitcoin transfers between parties, making micropayments and daily transactions feasible. By offloading most transactions from the mainchain, the HyperLayer aims to reduce congestion and improve the overall efficiency and usability of the Bitcoin network.

- VM Engine: Introduces virtual machine execution abstraction to ensure compatibility with mainstream virtual machines, bringing smart contracts to the Bitcoin network and supporting cost-effective migration of other decentralized applications (DApps).

- Enhanced Dumbo Protocol: Uses an asynchronous consensus mechanism to ensure high performance and scalability of the HyperLayer, achieving final atomicity and maximizing throughput efficiency within consensus groups.

- Decentralized Assets Mint: Enables asset management via Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC), supports ECDSA and Schnorr threshold signature algorithms, and ensures secure asset transfers between the Bitcoin network and HyperLayer.
- ZK Rollup: Aggregates and compresses HyperLayer data—including account and contract states—and anchors it onto UTXOs using zero-knowledge proofs. The UTXOs carry HyperLayer data, including validity and other relevant information.

- Dual-Mining: Bitcoin blocks carry transactions containing HyperLayer state data and zk-proofs, providing additional incentives to block miners.
Reigniting the Bitcoin DeFi Summer

Win-Win for Builders, Traders, and Users
In the development of the BTC Layer 2 ecosystem, user engagement, trading volume, and developer participation are critical—key prerequisites for the success of any public blockchain. Currently, BTC Layer 2 is still in its early stages and faces challenges in attracting users, traders, and developers.
